Celebrate the world premiere of Maurice and I, a local documentary that explores Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney’s hugely influential architectural legacy that was all but lost in the Ōtautahi Christchurch earthquakes.
Tickets are available to view this on the big screen at the Town Hall and is a must see. Beautiful film about incredible people and incredible properties that we live in and that we share community in. To hear the stories and see the historical footage of pre Town Hall, construction and post repair is fantastic watching.
MAURICE AND I celebrates the life and work of hugely influential New Zealand architects Sir Miles and Maurice Mahoney, whose built legacy was all but destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
This remarkable partnership, their approach to design and their signature use of materials, transformed the face of Christchurch in the 60s and 70s, and within a decade Christchurch was to shrug off its somewhat stuffy Georgian and neo-gothic architecture for a distinctive, ’brutalist’ style that was bold, modern, and often controversial.
Fast forward to 2011, a massive earthquake devastates New Zealand’s second largest city. Among the buildings that suffered major damage was the Christchurch Town Hall, regarded by many, including the architects themselves, as their finest work. Internationally renowned for its elegant, brutalist form and sophisticated interiors, the Christchurch Town Hall revolutionised the design approach to concert hall design and acoustic engineering.
As the Christchurch Town Hall’s fate hangs in the balance, Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, by then in their late 80s, reunite in their campaign to save this iconic building from demolition.
Combining rare archival footage and exclusive interviews – including Sir Miles and Maurice’s final interview together - the film reflects on their remarkable legacy, the impact of their bold architectural vision, and the enduring importance of architecture in shaping and enriching our lives.
Director Biography - Rick Harvie, Jane Mahoney
MAURICE AND I was co-directed by Christchurch-based filmmakers Rick Harvie and Jane Mahoney - daughter of the late architect, and 'title character', Maurice Mahoney.
RICK HARVIE founded Belmont Productions in 2000, and has produced and directed a variety of broadcast and corporate documentaries, commercials and music videos - most notably Resume Play ‘14, A Place to Remember ’16 and Len Lye: Mater of Motion ’23.
Rick is driven by a keen interest in the human condition, combining his passion for storytelling with a strong interest in the visual and performing arts, music and architecture.
JANE MAHONEY has spent almost three decades working in story-telling industries – initially as producer and co-owner of Bannan Films, a production company specialising in producing cinematic, story-based TV commercials throughout Asia and Australasia.
In the years following the Christchurch earthquakes, Jane worked as a Marketing and Communications Advisor for CERA, the government agency tasked with overseeing the region’s rebuild and recovery - the same agency that proposed the demolition of the iconic Christchurch Town Hall.
